crewAI is an open-source Python framework, with a paid platform around it, for developers who want to build their own teams of AI agents. crew bot is a finished product: a crew that already works your email, browser, servers and website chat, for a business that wants the work done rather than a system to build.

If you searched for "crew bot" and landed on crewAI, or the other way round, you're not the first. Both borrow the same picture: AI agents with roles, working together like a team. Under that shared idea they're very different things, made by different companies for different people. This page explains what crewAI actually is (it's very good at what it does), what crew bot is, and how to tell which one you need.

What is crewAI?

crewAI is a framework for "orchestrating role-playing, autonomous AI agents", in the words of its GitHub page. It's written in Python, released under the MIT licence, and standalone: it has "its own primitives for agents, tasks, crews, flows, tools, and orchestration" instead of sitting on top of another agent library. On GitHub it has about 60,000 stars.

The company behind it, also called CrewAI, sells a platform on top of the framework, aimed at large organisations. It says its platform runs more than 450 million agentic workflows a month and is used by 65% of the Fortune 500.

The framework: agents, tasks and crews

You describe each agent: its role, its goal and the tools it may use. You give the crew tasks, and the agents work through them, handing work to each other. Tools are how agents reach the outside world; crewAI's docs describe them as a way to "connect your agents to any API, database, or local tool". If agents are new to you, what is an AI agent covers the basics.

Getting started takes a few commands, from crewAI's installation guide (it needs Python 3.10 to 3.13):

uv tool install crewai
crewai create crew my_project
cd my_project
crewai install
crewai run

New projects are "JSON-first": agents live in agents/*.jsonc, tasks and crew settings in crew.jsonc, and --classic gives you the older Python and YAML layout. crewAI works with many model providers: native integrations for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Azure, AWS Bedrock and Snowflake Cortex, and many more through LiteLLM, including local models through Ollama.

Flows: the part that runs in production

A crew on its own is autonomous: the agents decide how to get the job done. For production, crewAI recommends starting with a Flow, which its docs define as "structured, event-driven workflows" that share state. You mark entry points with @start(), run a step when another finishes with @listen(), branch with @router(), and keep state across restarts with @persist. When a step needs a team, it calls a crew. In the docs' words, a Flow is "the 'manager' or the 'process definition' of your application", and crews are the teams that do the work inside it.

For people in the loop, Flows have a @human_feedback decorator (from version 1.8.0) for review steps, and the platform can pause a run in a "Pending Human Input" state, notify you by webhook and carry on once you approve.

CrewAI AMP: the platform, and what it costs

CrewAI AMP (Agent Management Platform) is where crews go to run. You can deploy crews "to a managed infrastructure with a few clicks", call them through a REST API, follow "detailed execution traces and logs", and build crews with little or no code in Crew Studio, a visual editor.

Its pricing, as listed on 4 November 2026:

  • Basic, free: the visual editor and an AI copilot, GitHub integration, tracing, guardrails, human-in-the-loop input and cron scheduling, with 50 workflow executions a month and 2 automations.
  • Enterprise, custom price: everything in Basic plus SSO, role-based access, PII redaction and policies, executions sized to your workflows, deployment on CrewAI's cloud, your own VPC or your own infrastructure, and 45 days of onboarding.

There's no self-serve paid tier between the two, so production volume past 50 executions a month means talking to sales. The framework itself costs nothing: you pay your model provider and wherever you host it.

What is crew bot?

crew bot is a product you sign up for, not a framework you build with. You hand a job to the Lead, which plans the work and splits it between specialists who work at the same time; a skeptic checks what they find before it reaches you. The crew remembers how you like things done, so you explain a job once.

It already works where a business does. It reads and sorts your Gmail and drafts the replies that need you. It uses a real browser signed in to your portals. It answers questions from your Postgres or MySQL database in plain words, signs in to servers and routers over SSH, connects to 240+ apps, and on your Mac or Windows computer it can use the screen and desktop apps when you say so. Routines run on a schedule, and webhooks let your other systems hand it work.

It also answers your website's visitors: put one line on your site and a bot of yours replies from what your site and team say, and hands over to a person when it should. And it can put what it builds live on your own server, checking the app answers before switching over and keeping the release before.

What makes it safe to point at real systems: it asks before anything that writes, unless you've told it to go ahead; every job has a budget, fifty US cents by default, and it stops to ask if it needs more; logins are encrypted and never shown to a model; and every step is on record. Approvals come to your phone with buttons, or you talk to the Lead on Telegram. For the idea behind a crew of agents, see multi-agent systems.

Where crewAI is ahead

It's open source. MIT-licensed and on GitHub, free to read, change and run anywhere. If your rule is "no black boxes", crewAI wins outright. crew bot is a hosted product.

You control every piece. Each agent, task, tool and branch is yours to define, with your choice of dozens of model providers, local models included. crew bot makes those choices for you, picking models from several AI labs for each job (or using your own AI keys).

It goes inside your product. crewAI builds agents that become part of your software: called through an API, exported as an MCP server or a UI component. crew bot is a crew that works for you; it isn't a library you ship to your own customers.

Enterprise depth. Deployment in your own VPC or on your own infrastructure, SSO with Microsoft Entra and Okta, role-based access, PII redaction, OpenTelemetry traces, and engineers who come to you. For a large company with a platform team, that's the right shape.

A big community. About 60,000 GitHub stars, a community forum, and courses through which crewAI says more than 100,000 developers have been certified.

Where crew bot is ahead

Nothing to build. Sign up and tell the Lead the job. With crewAI, a developer designs the agents, writes the tools, handles the errors, hosts it and keeps it running. That's the right trade for a software team building a product; it's a lot to ask of a business that just wants its invoices chased.

Already connected to real work. Gmail, a signed-in browser, databases, SSH to servers and routers, 240+ apps, your computer's desktop apps, routines and webhooks. In crewAI, each of those is a tool someone has to write, configure or install.

Safe by default. Asking before anything that writes, a budget on every job, a vault for logins and a record of every step come switched on. In crewAI they're possible and well supported, but you build them in.

A website chat and its analytics. Support for your sites comes in the box: answers from your own pages, a person taking over when needed, and who visits, from where and what they read. See how to add AI chat to a website.

Deploys to your own server. It builds, starts, checks the app answers, switches over with HTTPS and keeps the release before, so you can roll back. AMP deploys crews; it isn't a tool for deploying your other apps. More on the crew's server and deploy work.

Simple pricing for a small team. Free, then $19, $49 or $149 a month per workspace, with the plan's AI measured at what the providers charge, no markup. crewAI's free tier is generous for building, but production volume past 50 executions a month is an Enterprise conversation.

The same job, both ways

Take a job most small businesses know: every Monday, chase the invoices that are more than a week overdue.

With crewAI, a developer would install the framework, define an accounts agent with a role and a goal, and give it a tool that reads your accounting database and another that sends email. They'd wrap it in a Flow that runs the crew and then pauses at a @human_feedback step so someone approves the reminders, and deploy it to AMP with cron scheduling, or to a server of your own. It's real engineering work, and the result is exactly what you designed, owned by you line by line.

With crew bot, you'd tell the Lead: "Every Monday at 9, find the invoices more than a week late and draft reminders." It sets up a routine, reads your database, drafts the reminders and asks you on your phone before anything goes out. It's done in a conversation, but you get crew bot's way of doing the job, not a system you own.

Which to choose

Choose crewAI if

  • You're a developer or engineering team building agents into your own product or internal platform
  • You want open source you can read, change and host anywhere
  • You need full control over models, tools and every step, or must run on your own infrastructure

Choose crew bot if

  • You run a business and want the work done this week, without building an agent system
  • You want one crew across your inbox, browser, databases, servers and website chat, asking before it changes anything
  • You want a free start and a flat monthly price per workspace

Some teams will use both: crewAI for agents inside the product they sell, crew bot for running the business around it. For the wider field, see the best AI agents for small businesses or all our comparisons.

FAQ

Is crewAI free?

The framework is: it's open source under the MIT licence, so you only pay your model provider and your hosting. The CrewAI AMP platform has a free Basic plan with 50 workflow executions a month and 2 automations; beyond that, the Enterprise plan is priced on request.

Is crew bot built on crewAI?

No. They're separate products from separate companies: crewAI comes from CrewAI, crew bot from Eikal. They share an idea, AI agents with roles working as a team, and little else: crewAI is a framework you build with, crew bot a product you hand work to.

Do I need to know Python to use crewAI?

For the framework, yes: it needs Python 3.10 to 3.13, and you define agents and tasks in code or config files. CrewAI AMP adds a visual editor and an AI copilot for building crews with little or no code, and crewAI pitches the platform at business teams as well as engineers.

What's the difference between crews and Flows in crewAI?

A crew is a team of agents that decides for itself how to finish its tasks. A Flow is an event-driven workflow that holds state and decides, step by step, what runs next. crewAI recommends starting production apps with a Flow and calling a crew inside a step when a job needs a team.
